Since it’s beginning in 1978, Guided Discoveries has emphasized continual evolution and innovation in all areas of the program. From the early days when campers were able to experiment with real scientific equipment to current day innovations that allow campers to experience the magic of nature in unique and entertaining ways, Guided Discoveries has placed a premium on progress.
This tradition continues through the Guided Discoveries Research and Development, affectionately nicknamed "Skunk Works" after the Lockheed Martin special projects division. Skunk Works has two goals: First to research new opportunities in the realm of education, whether they be new uses of technology or old school hands-on lab displays. The second area of operation is the continual maintenance and incremental improvement of existing equipment and displays.
Below you will find a small sample of Skunk Works projects.
