45 Years of Discovery: How Guided Discoveries Has Transformed Summer Camp in California

A Legacy Born from Curiosity

Since 1978, Guided Discoveries has been helping children grow through unique opportunities fIn 1978, two science teachers—Ross and Kristi Turner—had a vision. They believed learning should be hands-on, exciting, and connected to the real world. So they mortgaged their home, moved to Catalina Island, and founded the Catalina Island Marine Institute (CIMI).

What began as a small marine science camp soon grew into a movement: a family of programs built to spark curiosity and confidence through exploration.

From One Camp to a California Legacy

Over the past 45 years, Guided Discoveries has expanded its reach across California, inspiring generations of students and summer campers through immersive learning:

Together, these programs form the foundation of the best overnight camps in California, reaching more than a million children and educators since their inception.

Transforming the Meaning of Camp

Guided Discoveries redefined what camp could be. It’s not just a place to spend a week—it’s an environment where children:

Campers don’t just learn facts; they learn about themselves. They leave with stronger skills, lifelong friendships, and a deeper appreciation for the world around them.

Education Meets Adventure

Every Guided Discoveries program blends academic learning with the magic of camp:

By connecting science, creativity, and community, these programs turn learning into adventure and discovery into lifelong growth.

A Lasting Impact on California Youth

Over four decades later, GDI’s impact continues to ripple across California and beyond. Many former campers return as counselors, educators, or even send their own children to camp—proof that the cycle of discovery continues.

Guided Discoveries has not only shaped summer camp culture in California but also influenced how experiential learning is viewed nationwide.

Looking Toward the Future

The next 45 years of Guided Discoveries will continue to expand opportunities for children to learn through doing. With new initiatives in environmental educationSTEM innovation, and character development, the mission remains as strong as ever:

“To make a difference in the lives of children through unique opportunities for discovery.”
